Billy DeCosta is an educator, serves as the director of the Kokee Discovery Center and is the only environmental resource teacher on Kauai. DeCosta grew up on Kaua'i, where his father worked on the sugar plantations.
He attended Humboldt State University, where he studied business administration and speech communications. He worked as a cost engineer and an accountant on O'ahu before returning to Kaua'i, where he spent 10 years as a longshoreman.
He then received a teaching certificate from Chaminade University and went to work at his alma mater, Waimea High School. He teaches project-based special education, preparing students for real-world jobs working with carpentry, masonry and welding.
